A Funny Conversation at a Difficult Time

OK, I know this isn't a Yuma post, and I apologize for that. I do have more to tell, but I have lots of stuff going on right now, and just can't focus on anything. I will try to get back to telling my Yuma story soon. My Mom has been in the hospital over the last week. I call her everyday to check in on her, and she sounds good, but then I talk to my sister and find out it's an act. I expect this; I'm the youngest in the family, and I'm 3,000 miles away, so she doesn't want me to worry. (Annoying!) Yesterday, I tried calling Mom in the morning around the same time I always do, and there was no answer. I tried an hour later, and got the same result. At lunchtime, still no answer. I tried again at about 2:30 and when I still got no answer I called my sister. She said she was worried, too, so she called the nurse's station on Mom's floor. She had been in testing all day. I felt much better after that. At about 3:30, I tried Mom's room again and was finally able to talk to her. I won't go into all the details, but there was a kind of funny part of our conversation: Mom: I retired today. Me: Over the phone? After 35 years?? Mom: (laughing) Yes! I had to let them know... Me: You'd think after 35 years, a face-to-face would be more appropriate. Mom: (laughing more) I never thought about that. How do you retire after 35 years over the phone??? It just tickled my funny bone, which was good, because the rest of our conversation did not. Mom has heart disease and is currently in congestive heart failure. We're hoping she is strong enough to have surgery next week to replace her defibrillator. It was supposed to be today, but they cancelled it due to her strength level, and other areas of concern. So, I'm hoping for the best for now. I may need to take a trip back east to see her soon, we'll see. I'll keep you all posted.

Ann,
I can only imagine too well how you must've felt when you got no reply trying to call your mom 3 times...
I hope and pray all will go well and she'll be back with her family enjoying her (Well deserved and executed) retirement both at home with her loved ones and on the phone with you.
She will be in our prayers.

Hang in there friend. I know how it feels to be so far away from family when medical issues are at hand. Been there... done that.

I hope your Mom's obvious spirited disposition keeps her well! I'll keep her my prayers for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about that. Hope that things work out. You have my thoughts. My mom just had a stroke last week, but she appears to be doing ok.

I'll hang in there with you!

Sorry about your mom Ann. It is never easy and being so far away compounds things. I will be sending prayers also.

At least your mom still has the capacity to find humor in things. I've found that goes a long way in making it through tough times. These times can be very stressful. I hope everyone gets through just fine.

My thoughts and preayers go out to you all.

I'll be flying west to Washington in a couple weeks to see my Grandfather, for pretty much the same reason you'll be heading east.

You know how I feel about this, and because of my Dad, I know how you feel about this. If you have to come back here, I know you have plenty of family for support, but I want you to know I'm here to help too if I can. I'll call you later so we can talk.

Sorry to hear that Ann. I’ll be praying that the operation goes well.

Your mom, Dave’s mom, my mom has Alzheimer’s pretty bad. The fact that we can support each other, in good times and bad, is one of the reasons I blog.

Ann,

I hope your Mom is getting stronger and will be on the road to recovery very soon.
My father and brother both have congestive heart failure, so I can really empathize with you on this.
